PDA Applications


The following is just a small sample of what is available for your PDA. Visit the "Ectopic Brain" website, truly an excellent resource with a large listing of medical and non-medical applications and files, as well as links to various "how-to" guides. The following applications are all free, but there is a good number of quality commercial applications such as Stedman’s Medical Dictionary for PDA and 5 Minute Clinical Consult, both by Skyscape. AMSA Members should check out the AMSA PDA Center for big discounts on hardware and software available only to AMSA members. Additionally, check out Software Advice for free medical PDA software.


Pharmacopoeias

Epocrates (free version for Palm OS)
Free drug and formulary reference covering over 3,000 brand and generic drugs. Also includes a drug interaction checker.

Herbal Zone
This application provides one hundred entries of some of the most widely used herbs today.

Johns Hopkins Antibiotic Guide (freeware, requires registration)
A potential replacement for your battered Sanford guide, the Hopkins Antibiotic Guide serves as a quick-reference tool for accessing the latest information on diagnoses, pathogens, and antibiotics.


Point-of-Care Databases

Diagnosaurus (freeware, requires registration)
Differential diagnosis tool that includes 1000+ differential diagnoses, explore by disease, symptom, or organ system.

InfoRetriever (free for UW Medical Students)
InfoRetriever searches a full spectrum of evidence-based content and tools: all POEMs and Cochrane Systematic Review abstracts, more than 200 decision support tools, more than 2,200 diagnostic calculators supporting selection and interpretation of diagnostic tests and the H&P, over 700 summaries of evidence-based practice guidelines. Plus, the full 5-Minute Clinical Consult, and more. Talk with Adrian Gay in the computer lab for installation directions.


Clinical Decision Tools

MedRules

An award-winning application featuring useful clinical prediction rules taken from the medical literature.

Cholesterol Guidlines
An application designed to assist the clinician in implementing the ATP III Cholesterol Guidelines at the point of care.

Mini Mental Status Exam
A PDA version of the MMSE.

Shots Home
A quick reference to the current Childhood Immunization Schedule and the Adult Immunization Schedule. Details on each vaccine are available by clicking on the vaccine names.


Study Aids

Eponyms
A listing of 1,500 common and obscure medical eponyms (e.g., Rovsing's sign, Virchow's node) with descriptions.

Medical Mnemonics
A searchable database of medical mnemonics to help students remember the important details. The interface takes a little bit to get accustomed to.

PalmEKG
An arrhythmia guide for Palm PDAs. Shows normal and over 20 arrhythmias, with descriptions of general pattern, P wave, PR interval, QRS complex, rate, and rhythm.


Other Applications

FreewarePalm has a huge selection of freeware applications for Palm OS PDAs.

Adobe Reader for PalmOS (freeware)
Adobe Reader for Palm OS software lets you view Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files on handheld devices running Palm OS. Now take your eBooks, documents, and Adobe Photoshop Album slide shows from your desktop with you on your Palm OS device.

AvantGo (freeware)
Offline web content viewer: load web pages to your PDA when you HotSync to be viewed whenever convenient. Lots of channels to choose from, including the New York Times, Reuters, AccuWeather, American Medical News… In addition, you can add just about any webpage to a custom channel. Click on the links below to add the corresponding channels. When the link opens, follow the directions. For other channels, search or browse the AvantGo website. If you are having problems getting AvantGo info on your PDA, visit the Configuration Page and click Configure Device to be sure that your computer is setup correctly to transfer the web information to your PDA.

AccuWeather
Provides local forecast, as well as radar, satellite images, and travel forecasts.
AMA Code of Medical Ethics

For over 155 years, the AMA Code of Medical Ethics has been considered the most comprehensive ethics guide for physicians, covering a wide range of issues related to the patient-physician relationship, such as confidentiality and end-of-life care. It also addresses social policy issues that affect medical practice matters such as medical records, fees and charges, and professional rights.
